The 2024 Reading Expo is on Thursday, February 29th!
The Reading Expo is an annual project that Grade Seven students at SLMS participate in.
Students each select a novel to do their projects on.
It is much like a science fair, except instead of presentations on scientific experiments, the focus is on the novels.
This project has a major impact on the Term 2 English grade.
As students read their novels, they are expected to take notes on the following elements:
- Characters [character note sheet] [example]
- Setting
- Plot [planning sheet]
- Conflict [types of conflict]
- Theme
- Figurative Language
- Favorite Quotes
Students can also include
- About the Author
- Illustrations
- Pictures of who they would cast to play the characters
- Sometimes students even dress up as characters from the novel
- A book review [learn how to write a book review]
Time is provided in class for students to turn their notes into paragraphs. Then, once all of the components have been printed out, students are given time to create their tri-fold presentation board. Often students also create or acquire visual props that help them present their novel. Tri-fold boards are being provided to every student this year!
As this is a huge project, it is important for students to use the class time effectively. Some work at home may also be required. Here is a schedule to help students stay on track: reading_expo_schedule.pdf
